Travel Hacking with Adioso

a backpacking travel to europe R002-005

Travel hacking is the art of finding tricks and shortcuts to travel inexpensively.

The easiest way to travel hack is to find ridiculously cheap flights.

Often, the cheapest flights have a small window of opportunity. It's important you're ready to book spontaneously.

Today, flights from Perth, Australia, to Tehran, Iran, dropped $179 to $270.

Not only is that a 39% fall in price, it's a ridiculously cheap price to start.

Once you've booked a trip to Tehran, you might ask Adioso:

"Tehran to anywhere under $300"

Today, you can go to Kuala Lumpur for $0. Or Singapore for $13.

And then your travel hacking trip begins.

Kinda exciting isn't it?

Remote Japanese Log Cabin

038

Everyone knows Mt. Fuji, but few know Mt. Yotei.

The two mountains look almost identical. Mt. Yotei is half the size, half as popular, but just as magnificent.

It's also home to one of Japan's busiest ski resorts: Niseko. Which is unfortunate, because busy is annoying, and we're not into that sort of thing.

Thankfully, the town of Niseko slows to a trickle as the warmer months approach, and the locals slow down too.

By that stage this little cabin will be the perfect base for a hiking adventure.

Flights from Adioso HQ to Tokyo are less than $400 (one-way).

Once in Tokyo, you'll need to get to Sapporo, the closest town to Mt. Yotei with an airport and a JR train.

Boutique Hotel of the Week: The Ace Hotel Palm Springs

Ace Hotel, Palm Springs

Boutique hotels are cheaper than big hotels and better than hostels.

The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, California, is one of the best.

It doubles as a spa treatment resort. You can order alcoholic snow-cones from the skateboarding barman while you lay by the pool. In a hammock.

The rooms have record players and old vinyl. Bands sometimes play there too.

They're so cool, they even have a blog.

Prices range from $99 to $440 a night.

We suggest you stop over for a few nights while driving from L.A to Vegas in a vintage Caddilac. You’ll feel like Hunter. S in bat country.

Flights from Adioso HQ to LA are $600 (one-way).

Travel Hacking

To understand Adioso, you need to understand travel hacking.

Travel hacking is the art of finding tricks and shortcuts to travel inexpensively.

It’s really easy. There are plenty of blogs devoted to it. There are lots of busy forums too.

The tenets are simple. All you need to do is use the following to your advantage:

  • Frequent Flyer points
  • Credit card reward programs
  • Special offers
  • Airline reward programs
  • Cheap and hidden airfares
  • Alternative accommodation choices

All it takes is a little bit of effort.

Here is an example of someone who used travel hacking to visit four continents, nine countries, and fifteen cities for US$418.

Soon you’ll realise there’s nothing stopping you from visiting Paris for one week within the next six months. Or Berlin. Or Cairo. Or Prague. Or New York. Or Casablanca.

Some have it down to such an art they never pay a cent themselves.

What do you want to know about travel hacking? We'll post the responses on our blog.

Planning a trip to Tokyo?

Ebony Bizys’ blog, Hello Sandwich, may be the only guide you'll need.

She posts unique snapshots of her experiences within the city. She has a fascinating perspective.

She also has a knack of taking incredibly haunting photos like the two above. They'll suck you in and make you want to buy a ticket.

Thankfully, she has a PDF guide to Tokyo for sale and it's only $10.

Your own private island

Image19012011

This shack is where you wanna be.

It’s called The Sunset Gecko. You’ll find it on a little island within the Gili Islands in Indonesia. Getting there is easy.

First, fly to Bali.

Hop off, grab your stuff, and hop on another flight to Mataram.

Hail a cab to Bangsal Harbour. Stay only as long as you need. You’ll see why.

Climb aboard the public boat to Gili Meno.

Once the boat has docked, jump off, then hail a horse and cart. But don’t call it that. Ask for a Cidomo. The locals will know what you mean.

Make sure you tell the driver you’re headed to The Sunset Gecko; prices start from $8 per night.

And don’t forget to take a book.

Flights from Adioso HQ to Bali are less than $300 (one-way).
